Bishop's Castle Walking Festival 2025

Picture
Thank you to all our walkers for supporting this year's Festival, and to the huge 'behind the scenes' team of volunteers who make the Festival happen... the walk leaders, co-leaders, committee, emergency drivers, fringe event organisers, the Parish Paths Partnership volunteer team, local businesses and many others... We're beginning to plan for 2026 - to find out more or want to get involved, please come to our AGM, Thursday 17th July 6pm at The Six Bells in Bishop's Castle. You're also welcome to join a local walk before the AGM, starting at 4pm from Harley Jenkins St. car park in the town.

18 May 2025 - Exploring Stapely & Ancient Stone Circle and Scots Pines

Using the Dial a Ride minibus for this walk, we were dropped off to walk the ancient route along the length of Stapeley Common, passing through Mitchell’s Fold stone circle, to reach the distinctive landmark of Bromlow Callow.

18 May 2025 - Buzzards & Hares (may be) and a Pub stop at Lydbury North

A Sunday stroll from Bishop's Castle onto Oakeley Mynd, through the hamlet of Totterton to reach Lydbury North and a look into the 13th century church and the Powis Arms, before returning back to Bishop's Castle and the Six Bells.

18 May 2025 - Walking through borderland history. The Shropshire Way from Bishop's Castle to Clun, via Offa's Dyke.

Following in the footsteps of A. E. Housman this walk took us along what is arguably the one of best stages of the ShropshireWay - Bishop’s Castle to Clun, which includes a stretch along the Offa's Dyke National Trail. Our walk ended by the ruins of the 11th century border castle in Clun.

18 May 2025 - Exploring the Landscape between the Stiperstones and the Long Mynd

"Bring back nature, one step at a time" - this walk explored area to the west of the Bog, including Mucklewick, Nind and Nipstone. It was a walk & talk, looking out for some of the diverse wildlife, intriguing geological formations and scattered remnants of past farming and mining communities that have shaped the landscape over many centuries.

17 May 2025 - Shelve, Stiperstones and the Shropshire Way to Bishop's Castle

Our weekend walks included catching the 552/553 bus service to Shelve and walking up to the Stiperstones to follow the ShropshireWay over Nipstone & Linley Hill and back to Bishop's Castle. The bus departs 0930 on Saturdays (0940 weekdays) from Bishop's Castle if you fancy doing this walk

16 May 2025 - The Hills & Hill Forts around Hopesay

Exploring the Hills and Hillforts around Hopesay, and passing through 3 small villages of Hopesay, Kempton & Edgton, deep in the Shropshire Hills

16 May 2025 - Once upon a Hill

Tom & Jerry were our guides on this Once Upon a Hill ramble. Together they bought a wealth of knowledge as they explored the human and natural history, and the cultural legacy of the northern end of the Stiperstones.

16 May 2025 - Linley Hill & Norbury

We also explored Linley Hill and Norbury on Day 2. The route led away from the Stiperstones and followed the Linley Hill beech avenue down to Norbury where we saw one of the oldest yew trees in England.

16 May 2025 - Over the Border

With sunhats on and sun screen applied we headed Over the Border into Powys on Day 2 of the Festival... this walk started in Churchstoke and explored the nearby Welsh hills of Todleth, Roundton & Lan Fawr.

15 May 2025 - Snailbeach to Bishop's Castle

The Linley Beeches was our welcome picnic stop on the 11-mile linear walk from Snailbeach Lead Mine back to Bishops Castle, following the Shropshire Way along the Stiperstones Ridge, over Nipstone Hill and Linley Hill and through the hamlet of More.

15 May 2025 - Farming in the Shropshire Hills

Another beautiful walk over the Stiperstones, led by the Shropshire Hills National Landscape Team, and chance to visit two farms and to meet the farmers to hear about their work, the challenges of modern day farming in the Shropshire Hills, and the changes they are making to benefit the landscape, environment and farm business.

15 May 2025 - Take a Walk on the Wildwood Side

And we're off... some pictures from our Walk on the Wildwood Side on Day 1 of the Festival. The bluebells still in bloom as we walked through Cwmmawr Dingle, Henley Wood and Fron Wood
